SQL Server 2005 Security for System Administrators

Microsoft Tech*Ed Conference Session, 75 Minutes
Written/Presented by Kimberly L. Tripp, SQLskills.com and Rafal Lukawiecki, Project Bottecelli

SQL Server 2005 offers a variety of new security features whose understanding requires DBAs to step outside their general comfort zone. Furthermore, their inner workings require you to make important choices between various encryption algorithms and ways to protect the keys. Some of the choices you could make could make you less secure but with a false sense of security, others are more appropriate but with limitations, and others offer minimal limitations and excellent security. Do you know which is which? Enabling you to know the difference between these options is the job we aim to accomplish in this session. We will also demystify the terminology and help you avoid some of the common misconceptions that could derail the safety of your projects. We will discuss a way of layering security to strengthen your defenses. Due to extensive nature of new security features we hope to make you feel comfortable with their unexpected implications - for example to ensure that a backup with encrypted data can be restored without data loss. Don't worry - it's easy to do...if you know how to do it! Come to this session to get a wide variety of these new SQL Server 2005 features covered by both a specialist in SQL Server (Kimberly L. Tripp) and a specialist in Cryptography and Security (Rafal Lukawiecki). Get a feel for why these changes are relevant and how to best use them!
