SQL Server 2017 Cumulative Update 5

On March 20, 2018, Microsoft released SQL Server 2017 Cumulative Update 5, which is Build 14.0.3023.8. I count 14 hotfixes in the public fix list. It is good to see Microsoft getting back on schedule for their first year CU releases for SQL Server 2017, which are supposed to happen every month.

There are quite a few fixes for performance and the database engine area in this CU. Remember, there are not going to be any Service Packs for SQL Server 2017, so you are going to want to test and deploy SQL Server 2017 Cumulative Updates as they become available.

As always, I think it is a good idea to make an effort to stay current on Cumulative Updates, as does Microsoft.

  1. Glenn,

Quick question about installing CU on SQL Server 2014. On SQL 2014 instance, we have GDR and would like to install latest CU11 () on top of that GDR. Is this possible and/or supported?

    Thank you,
    Manoj

        1. If above is not possible OR not a good idea thing then I would imagine that better strategy would be to uninstall that SP2-GDR (12.0.5203.0) first so instance goes back to pure SP2 (12.0.5000.0).

Then as 2nd step, apply SP2’s CU11 (12.0.5579.0) to get current etc. Of course this will introduce additional downtime but probably safer bet.

          Thanks,
          Manoj

          1. You can install SP2 CU11 on top of your current build. Once you install a CU, you will be “on the CU train”, so no going back to the GDR train. I think installing CUs is a better place to be anyway.

  2. Thank you Glenn, really appreciate your time and help. We want to get on that “the CU train”, and I would 100% concur with you about “installing CUs is a better place to be anyway”.

    Regards,
