It covers interesting new hardware and software developments that are generally relevant for SQL Server).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: medium;\">SSMS 18.0 Goes GA<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">SQL Server Management Studio 18.0 <a href=\"https:\/\/cloudblogs.microsoft.com\/sqlserver\/2019\/04\/24\/sql-server-management-studio-ssms-18-0-released-for-general-availability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">became generally available<\/a> on April 24, 2019. This means that it is the final release version (as opposed to being a preview or release candidate version). It is Build 15.0.18118.0. The <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/sql\/ssms\/release-notes-ssms?view=sql-server-2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Release Notes<\/a> detail all of the new features, improvements and bug fixes in SSMS 18.0.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sqlskills.com\/blogs\/glenn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/image-3.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sqlskills.com\/blogs\/glenn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/image_thumb-3.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"705\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Figure 1: SSMS 18.0 About Form<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">It is officially supported on Windows 10 version 1607 Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2012 R2 (64-bit), Windows Server 2012 (64-bit), and Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit). Older preview versions worked on 64-bit Windows 7 SP1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">If you have a preview or release candidate version of SSMS 18.0 installed, you should uninstall it before you install the GA release version.You can <a href=\"https:\/\/go.microsoft.com\/fwlink\/?linkid=2088649\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">download it here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">SQL Server 2019 CTP 2.5 Available<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">On April 24, 2019,\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/cloudblogs.microsoft.com\/sqlserver\/2019\/04\/24\/sql-server-2019-community-technology-preview-2-5-is-now-available\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft also released<\/a> SQL Server 2019 CTP 2.5. Many of the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/sql\/sql-server\/what-s-new-in-sql-server-ver15?view=sqlallproducts-allversions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new features in this release<\/a> are focused on making it easier to deploy and manage \u201cbig data clusters\u201d.\u00a0 This is how Microsoft describes a big data cluster:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Starting with SQL Server 2019 preview, SQL Server big data clusters allow you to deploy scalable clusters of SQL Server, Spark, and HDFS containers running on Kubernetes. These components are running side by side to enable you to read, write, and process big data from Transact-SQL or Spark, allowing you to easily combine and analyze your high-value relational data with high-volume big data.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sqlskills.com\/blogs\/glenn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/kubernetes-cluster.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"Kubernetes Cluster\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sqlskills.com\/blogs\/glenn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/kubernetes-cluster_thumb.png\" alt=\"Kubernetes Cluster\" width=\"1028\" height=\"567\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Figure 2: Kubernetes Cluster<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">There are also improvements in <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/sql\/relational-databases\/system-dynamic-management-views\/sys-dm-exec-query-plan-stats-transact-sql?view=sqlallproducts-allversions\">sys.dm_exec_query_plan_stats<\/a>, including a new database scoped configuration option that lets you control whether last query plan statistics are available at the database level (as opposed to instance-wide with TF 2451).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I think Microsoft must be pushing pretty hard to get SQL Server 2019 to GA status by July 9, 2019, which is when SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2 fall out of extended support. This is just my own common sense speculation. That\u2019s what I would be pushing for if I were in charge!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">AMD Ryzen 7 2700X 5oth Anniversary Edition<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">AMD is releasing a special 50th Anniversary Ryzen 7 2700X desktop processor. This processor will have the same exact specifications as a normal AMD Ryzen 7 2700X processor, but will come in special gold colored packaging. It will also have a laser engraved signature from AMD President and CEO\u00a0 Dr. Lisa Su on the heat spreader as shown in Figure 3. This will be covered up when you install the processor. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sqlskills.com\/blogs\/glenn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/50th-anniversary-ryzen.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"50th Anniversary Ryzen\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sqlskills.com\/blogs\/glenn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/50th-anniversary-ryzen_thumb.png\" alt=\"50th Anniversary Ryzen\" width=\"772\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Figure 3: 50th Anniversary AMD Ryzen 7 2700X Processor<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">To be fair, AMD is including a few other things to help justify the cost of this processor compared to a typical Ryzen 7 2700X processor. These include a coupon for a AMD 50th Anniversary T-Shirt, and a special AMD sticker signed by Dr. Su.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sqlskills.com\/blogs\/glenn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/amd-ryzen-7-2700x-package.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"AMD Ryzen 7 2700X Package\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sqlskills.com\/blogs\/glenn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/amd-ryzen-7-2700x-package_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"AMD Ryzen 7 2700X Package\" width=\"1028\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Figure 4: AMD 50th Anniversary AMD Ryzen 7 2700X Packaging<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113102\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">retailers<\/a> are also adding game bundles to the deal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Personally, I wouldn\u2019t buy this. It is interesting as a collector\u2019s item, but I am not that much of a collector. It would have been much more interesting if AMD had decided to offer higher specifications on a cherry-picked version of this processor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/reviews\/intel-core-i7-8086k-cpu-8086-anniversary,5658.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">similar to what Intel did with the special<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/ark.intel.com\/content\/www\/us\/en\/ark\/products\/148263\/intel-core-i7-8086k-processor-12m-cache-up-to-5-00-ghz.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Intel Core i7-8086K processor<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(Glenn\u2019s Technical Insights\u2026 used to be part of our bi-weekly newsletter but we decided to make it a regular blog post instead so it can get more visibility.
