It covers interesting new hardware and software developments that are generally relevant for SQL Server).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">SQL Server Management Studio 18.2 Released<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">On July 25, 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/cloudblogs.microsoft.com\/sqlserver\/2019\/07\/25\/sql-server-management-studio-18-2-is-now-generally-available\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft released SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) 18.2<\/a>. This is mostly a bug fix release, but there are a few new features. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Intellisense support for the new OPTIMIZE_FOR_SEQUENTIAL_KEY option for indexes<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Added a completion time in messages to track when a query completed<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Added a new attribute in QueryPlan when the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/sql\/relational-databases\/performance\/intelligent-query-processing?view=sqlallproducts-allversions#scalar-udf-inlining\">inline scalar UDF feature<\/a> is enabled (ContainsInlineScalarTsqlUdfs)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Added SMO support for <em>Feature Restrictions<\/em>. For more information on the feature itself, see <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/sql\/relational-databases\/security\/feature-restrictions\">Feature Restrictions<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">It is becoming more obvious that Microsoft is pushing Azure Data Studio as their preferred tool over SSMS. I don\u2019t think SSMS is going to be abandoned any time soon, but it is clearly getting less love than Azure Data Studio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sqlskills.com\/blogs\/glenn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/image-2.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sqlskills.com\/blogs\/glenn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/image_thumb-2.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"705\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Figure 1: SSMS 18.2<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The complete <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/sql\/ssms\/release-notes-ssms?view=sqlallproducts-allversions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">release notes are here<\/a>. You <a href=\"https:\/\/go.microsoft.com\/fwlink\/?linkid=2099720\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">can download SSMS 18.2 here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">SQL Server 2014 Cumulative Updates<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Even though SQL Server 2014 fell out of mainstream support on July 9, 2019, there is actually one final set of Cumulative Updates for SQL Server 2014 that were released on July 29, 2019. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4500181\/cumulative-update-4-for-sql-server-2014-sp3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SQL Server 2014 SP3 CU4<\/a> (Build 12.0.6329.1)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4500180\/cumulative-update-18-for-sql-server-2014-sp2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SQL Server 2014 SP2 CU18<\/a> (Build 12.0.5687.1)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">There are four public hotfixes in SQL Server 2014 SP2 CU18, and there are nineteen public hotfixes in SQL Server 2019 SP3 CU4. If you are on SQL Server 2014, you should get on SQL Server 2014 SP3 CU4 eventually, since that is going to be the last released build (unless there are any security updates between now and July 9, 2024, which is pretty likely).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">There are also probably going to be the latest round of Cumulative Updates for SQL Server 2016 and SQL Server 2017 later this week, so keep your eye out for that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(Glenn\u2019s Technical Insights\u2026 used to be part of our bi-weekly newsletter but we decided to make it a regular blog post instead so it can get more visibility.
