{"id":870,"date":"2014-03-05T15:49:27","date_gmt":"2014-03-05T23:49:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/3.209.169.194\/blogs\/glenn\/?p=870"},"modified":"2018-11-13T10:52:25","modified_gmt":"2018-11-13T18:52:25","slug":"two-new-tpc-e-benchmark-results-for-intel-xeon-ivy-bridge-ex-processors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sqlskills.com\/blogs\/glenn\/two-new-tpc-e-benchmark-results-for-intel-xeon-ivy-bridge-ex-processors\/","title":{"rendered":"Two New TPC-E Benchmark Results for Intel Xeon Ivy Bridge-EX Processors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of weeks ago, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tpc.org\/tpce\/results\/tpce_last_ten_results.asp\">two new TPC-E benchmark submissions<\/a> showed up for four-socket servers with the new 22nm, 15-core <a href=\"https:\/\/ark.intel.com\/products\/75251\/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E7-4890-v2-37_5M-Cache-2_80-GHz\">Intel Xeon E7-4890 v2 processor<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sqlskills.com\/blogs\/glenn\/bigger-database-servers-get-faster\/?utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=bigger-database-servers-get-faster\">I discussed a few days ago<\/a>. NEC submitted a result for a four-socket <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tpc.org\/tpce\/results\/tpce_result_detail.asp?id=114021701\">NEC Express5800\/A2040b<\/a> system with a raw TPC-E score of 5,087.17, while IBM submitted a result for a four-socket <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tpc.org\/tpce\/results\/tpce_result_detail.asp?id=114021601\">IBM System x3850 X6<\/a> system with a raw TPC-E score of 5,576.27.<\/p>\n<p>These are both incredible scores for a four-socket system, both for the actual raw score and from a score per physical core perspective. Both of these tested systems have actual TPC-E scores that rival an eight-socket system with the previous generation 32nm <a href=\"https:\/\/ark.intel.com\/products\/53579\/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E7-4870-(30M-Cache-2_40-GHz-6_40-GTs-Intel-QPI)\">Intel Xeon E7-4870<\/a> Westmere-EX processor, while their single-threaded performance (as measured by the TPC-E score divided by the number of physical cores) is also relatively close to what we see in the latest 22nm <a href=\"https:\/\/ark.intel.com\/products\/75283\">Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2<\/a> Ivy Bridge-EP processors. You also get much higher memory capacity and PCI-E 3.0 support with the new processor.<\/p>\n<p>On the negative side, your SQL Server 2012\/2014 core license costs will be 50% higher if you go with the high-end 15-core E7-4890 v2 processor. One alternative would be to use the 12-core, <a href=\"https:\/\/ark.intel.com\/products\/75249\/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E7-4860-v2-30M-Cache-2_60-GHz\">Xeon E7-4860 v2 processor<\/a> or even the ten-core, <a href=\"https:\/\/ark.intel.com\/products\/75247\/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E7-4830-v2-20M-Cache-2_20-GHz\">Xeon E7-4830 v2 processor<\/a> to minimize your SQL Server 2012\/2014 license costs. One slight problem with that strategy is that the base and turbo clock speeds are lower in the lower core-count processors in the Xeon E7-48xx v2 product family, since they don\u2019t have lower core count, \u201cfrequency-optimized\u201d models like the Xeon E5-26xx v2 product family does.<\/p>\n<p>Four-socket systems with these new processors are going to be much faster and have much more total load capacity than previous four-socket systems with the older Westmere-Ex processor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of weeks ago, two new TPC-E benchmark submissions showed up for four-socket servers with the new 22nm, 15-core Intel Xeon E7-4890 v2 processor that I discussed a few days ago.
