Indexing for Performance - Improving Aggregations & Indexed Views

Tech*Ed Conference Session, 75 minutes
Written/Presented by Kimberly L. Tripp, SQLskills.com

Indexes on base tables can significantly improve the performance for highly selective queries as well as range queries. However, often you're interesting in more complex details: aggregations, computations or details from joined data. In low selectivity/range queries you must consider some form of covering. Indexed Views offer more flexible way of covering some of your more complex and critical queries. In this session we'll look at what types of queries benefit the most from indexed views! Overall, you'll get a great feel for when, why and how you should create optimal indexed views – in ALL editions of SQL Server 2000.
