Latches and spinlocks whitepapers have moved

Last month I was looking for the spinlocks whitepaper and discovered that both it and the latches whitepaper had disappeared from the Microsoft website. I contacted my good friend Pedro Lopes in the Product Group and he arranged for them to be integrated into the SQL Server documentation.

You may be asking “what whitepapers?”…

Back in 2011 the old SQLCAT team wrote two whitepapers, that I helped to tech review, on interpreting and dealing with latch and spinlock issues. They’re both excellent and I strongly recommend reading these whitepapers if you want to improve your performance tuning skills beyond looking at wait statistics.
